When a speed test reports zero upload speed, your connection may be unable to send data upstream, or the test may not have completed correctly. Download access can still appear normal because downloading and uploading use different traffic paths, device processes, and network capacity. The first step is to confirm whether the result is a temporary measurement error or a genuine upload problem.

What a Zero Upload Result Means

Upload speed measures how quickly your device sends data to the internet. It affects video calls, cloud backups, file sharing, live streaming, online gaming updates, and any service that transmits data. A result of 0 Mbps means the test detected little or no usable upstream throughput during its upload phase. It does not always mean that your ISP connection is completely offline.

The Speed Test May Have Failed

Router or Modem Problems Can Affect Uploads

A router or modem may continue forwarding downloads while its upstream process is malfunctioning. Firmware bugs, excessive heat, memory pressure, a failed restart, or a damaged upstream channel can affect upload traffic without immediately stopping all internet access.

Restart the modem and router according to the provider's recommended sequence, then wait for the connection lights to stabilize. Check whether the equipment is hot, whether cables are firmly connected, and whether the coaxial, fiber, or Ethernet cable shows visible damage. Avoid repeated factory resets unless the ISP or equipment documentation recommends one, because a reset may remove connection settings.

Your ISP May Have an Upstream Signal Problem

Cable broadband, fiber, fixed wireless, and other access networks can experience faults that affect upstream capacity while download service remains partly available. Maintenance, a local outage, signal levels outside the normal range, or an account provisioning error can all cause extremely low or zero upload performance.

Test more than once at different times and compare results from a wired device. Check the ISP outage page or service notifications. Contact the ISP when upload remains at zero on multiple devices and a wired test, especially if the issue began suddenly. Another Device or Application Is Using the Upload Bandwidth
