How to Test Ethernet Speed and Find Slow Network Causes

Testing Ethernet speed can show whether a slow connection comes from your computer, cable, router, modem, or ISP. A wired test is usually more reliable than Wi-Fi because it reduces interference and signal variation. To get useful results, connect one computer directly to the router or modem with an Ethernet cable, pause heavy downloads, and close applications that use the network.
How to Test Ethernet Speed Correctly
Open a reputable internet speed test and record download speed, upload speed, and latency. Run the test several times at different times of day, using the same computer and Ethernet port. If possible, use a modern browser and confirm that the network adapter reports a 1 Gbps or faster link when your equipment supports it. Compare the results with your ISP plan, but remember that advertised speeds may represent maximum or typical service conditions rather than a guaranteed result.
Cause 1: A Damaged or Limited Ethernet Cable
An old, damaged, or poorly terminated cable can negotiate a lower link rate or create transmission errors.
